Clause 6(1) of this licence provides that the licensee shall, to the satisfaction of the Director of Public Works, provide at his own expense improved landing facilities at Shau Kei Wan. With the consent of the Central Tender Board, and before this tender was recommended for acceptance, the company was approached to find out whether it would finance substantial improvements to the pier at Shau Kei Wan.

The company and the Director of Public Works have agreed on a schedule of required works to improve the piers, and the company has undertaken in writing that it will complete the scheduled works at its own expense to the satisfaction of the Director of Public Works. These will involve improvements to the roof, the fendering system, landing steps and handrails, and the lower structural steel members of the pier at an estimated cost of about $54,000.

The Hop Shing Kung Ferry Company Limited is the existing operator of the above service and, so far, the company has operated the service satisfactorily. Its tender is therefore recom- mended for acceptance.

Honourable Members will be asked to advise whether approval should be given, under regulation 10 of the Ferries Regula- tions (Chapter 104), for the Colonial Secretary to grant a licence to the Hop Shing Kung Ferry Company for the exclusive right to maintain a passenger ferry service between Shau Kei Wan, Rennie's Mill and Hang Hau for a period of three years on the terms and conditions set out in the draft licence at Annex B.
(The Commissioner for Transport (Mr I. F. C. MAC- PHERSON) will attend before the Council for the discussion of this item).
