CONTAINER TERMINAL FOR 50,000 TON CLASS FREIGHTERS AT NAM TAU

The officials also analysed the advantages of making investments in Shum Chun. Now that Shum Chun is recognised as a city, it will have more authority and sufficient resources will be provided by the state in stages, they said. The State will equip the city with sufficient manpower and

resources.

At present, they are planning to build a Shum Chun city to the west

of the railway line, with a one-million-sq-meter industrial estate.

On transportation, a pier to cater for containers of up to 50,000

tons will be built at Nam Tau and the Man Kam To Road will be widened.

Beginning from April 1, Hong Kong Electric will start supplying electricity to Shum Chun. With the commissioning of a power plant at She Kau, (completed but not yet operational), it is hoped that the electricity supply problem could be solved.

The authorities concerned would soon simplify the immigration procedures to make travel easy for Hong Kong industrialists who want to

invest at Shum Chun.

The official pointed out that Shum Chun has more than 2,000 Kms

of land, plus 55,000 acres of arable land and a workforce of more than

300,000. Furthermore Shum Chun is famous for such products as lai chee, lobsters, etc. and being close to Hong Kong. All these have made Shum Chun

a favourable place for investment.

Mr. Lee Ting also introduced the Shum Chun holiday resort plan

to the seminar participants. He pointed out that there are three important

projects in the plan:

Depot will turn the place into a summer resort similar to Tien Hu.
