16. As I made clear in the House on eighteenth May we

welcome the present Chinese leadership's positive and

outward looking foreign policy. We hope that they will

exert they very considerable influence, particularly in

the developing world in the interest of international

stability and prosperity.

CHINA/VIETNAM

17. We have followed the recent talks in Hanoi between China

and Vietnam with sympathetic interest. We welcome any

reduction in the area of tension and hope that their

differences can be resolved peacefully and in accordance with

the provisions of the United Nations Charter.
