COMMERCIAL RELATIONS

9. As I said in the House on eighteenth May, we are

looking for a major expansion of our trading relationship

with China. We have an Economic Cooperation Agreement which

two way trade provides for bi-laterál aid of fourteen million dollars up to 1985.

ENERGY EXHIBITION IN PEKING

The Chinese Government have taken modernisation of

their power industries as one of their top priority

We hope that the British Energy Exhibition being held in

Peking from six to sixteenth June will secure major

contracts in these fields.

CULTURAL/EDUCATIONAL/ SCIENTIFIC EXCHANGES

11. The Government attach great importance to our exchanges

in the cultural, educational, scientific and technology

fields, and we are especially looking for a major expansion

of this over the months and years to come.

HONG KONG

12. We enjoy very good relations with the Chinese Government

over. Hong Kong and share with them an onterest in Hong

Kong's continuing stability and prosperity. The Governor

of Hong Kong's visit to China earlier this year was very

successful and further improved our mutual understanding

1997 is still a long way off it will be fruitless to

speculate on what might happen between now and then. The

Chinese Government have made clear that they share our

interest in maintaining international and business confidence

in Hong Kong's future.
