1. The present Governor, Mr G C Guy, has been in office since December 1976 and his term is due to expire in December 1979.

Because of St Helena's extreme isolation, few resources and the people's deep attachment to Britain, independence is not a realistic option. The Territory needs both new ideas for development and continuity of management. Mr Guy has a wide range of experience, particularly in development, budgetary matters and staff management in small islands. enjoys the job and is tackling the Territory's very special problems with considerable enthusiasm.
