Mr Hunt was born on 29 June 1926 and educated at St Peter's Hall, Oxford, where he read Law. He served in the RAF from 1944-48.
From 1950-51 he was employed as a teacher at Durston House Prep. School and Oakham School, Rutland.
In 1952 he joined HMOCS and was appointed as an Administrative Cadet in Uganda. After service as District Officer and Acting District Commissioner, he became Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources in 1960. From 1962 until his retirement he served as a District Commissioner.
He joined the FCO in 1963 and served in the Commonwealth Relations Office and subsequently as First Secretary in Kuching, then Jesselton and then in Brunei. In all of these three posts he was on his own. In Ankara from 1968-70 he was First Secretary (Economic) and in Jakarta from 1970-72 he was Head of Chancery. From 1972-74 he served in the FCO again as Assistant Head of Middle East Department before going out to Saigon in 1974 on promotion to Counsellor. He was evacuated to Singapore in 1975 at the time of the fall of Saigon. Since 1976 he has been in Kuala Lumpur as Counsellor (Commercial) and Deputy High Commissioner.
He is married with one daughter and one son, the youngest of whom is 15.
As well as his HMOCS experience, Mr Hunt has a good all round record in the DS. He is a pragmatist rather than a deep thinker or theoretician but is a very sound operator and particularly good with people. In the DS he has done well during his periods of independent command in Kuching, Jesselton, a difficult period in Brunei and as Acting High Commissioner in Kuala Lumpur.
