Mr Papadopoulos was born on 12 August 1923 in Cyprus and entered Cyprus Government service after completing his secondary education in Cyprus.
In 1943, he was posted to Eritrea where he served for ten years, rising from Chief Clerk to Assistant Political Secretary and Personal Assistant to the Chief Administrator. From 1953 to 1958, he reverted to the Cyprus Government, working both in the Secretariat and in the districts, con- centrating latterly on press work in the Secretariat. 1958 he was brought out to London because of the troubles and in 1959 was sent out to Tanganyika in the HMOCS. He served as Assistant Secretary in the Office of the Chief Secretary and subsequently as Deputy Controller of Information Services.

From 1961 to 1964 he served in Malta as Director of British Information Services and subsequently transferred to the Diplomatic Service. From 1965 he spent three years in Nairobi, again on information work, before being brought home to London for three years in the Foreign Office's UN (Political) Department. From 1971 to 1974 he served as First Secretary and Head of Chancery in Colombo. He was then briefly Counsellor (Information) in Washington and then for three years Counsellor and Head of Chancery in Havana. Since 1977 he has been HM Ambassador in San Salvador.
He is married with two daughters and one son, the youngest of whom is 14. His wife is a trained nurse. He speaks good Spanish.
Mr Papadopoulos has had an unusual career with a wealth of administrative experience. He rose high in the Cyprus administration before being transferred to London. He has turned in a sound performance throughout, apart from when he was miscast in the notoriously difficult Counsellor (Information) job in Washington. As Ambassador in San Salvador he has handled well the tricky situation that has arisen from the Bolsa kidnapping. He earns respect for

sound and confident judgement and calm commonsense. qualities together with his Latin American experience make him a credible candidate for the Governorship of Belize.
