2. As you know, the formal retirement age for members

of the Diplomatic Service is 60 and there have to be

quite exceptional reasons for departing from this rule

even for quite short extensions. It is also formal

practice to limit Governors' appointments in small island

communities to three years. There have been exceptions

made to this rule

has not always been entirely happy. a number of cases

best of governors to continue for too long in the

claustrophobic and parochial atmosphere of such communiti

3. I can well understand your mixed feelings about

leaving the Falklands, particularly when the Islanders

are anxious for you to remain. We for our part are

conscious of the dedicated way in which you have tacked

what must at times have been a really difficult job.
