Conditions of Service

9. The PUS referred to the need to ensure that when Diplomatic Service officers were seconded for duty in Dependent Territories their terms and conditions of service should be comparable with those to which they would be entitled in a Diplomatic Service post overseas. It was also unsatisfactory that Governors should have to negotiate their own terms and conditions of service with local Governments. In discussion the Board recognised the political difficulty of persuading a local legislature to pay for standards, eg of furnishing, superior to the local norm; but there were pregedents for supplementing Governors emoluments from HMG's funds when the local provision was inadequate. It was agreed that the Chief Clerk should examine this whole question.
