On 31 May 1978, acting upon information Narcotics Bureau officers arrested Chinese male CHUI Lung-yiu (1776/7127/5069) and Chinese female KWAN So-lam (7070/4790/3830) as they arrived at Hong Kong airport. A search of their luggage showed that each was carrying a false bottomed suitcase. In total sixty three polythene bags containing 2.342 kilos of esters of morphine were seized. Investigations revealed that the drugs had been picked up in Bangkok but the couple, in an apparent attempt to allay suspicion by customs, had then transited Hong Kong to Taiwan and Korea before returning on a flight from Seoul. The drugs seized were pure and could have been diluted in Hong Kong. The pair are currently awaiting committal to the Supreme Court.
(AP/CR/90/78) 11 Acting upon information Customs and Excise officers and divers searched the sea-bed near the Ninepin islands, and on 10 June 1978 discovered a cache of acetic anhydride. A total of seventeen jerrycans were recovered containing 306 litres of acetic anhydride. It is believed the importation was brought in by a Taiwan trawler. No arrest was made.

12 On 13 June 1978, a surveillance operation was mounted upon a suspected drug courier after he arrived at Hong Kong airport. A subsequent raid upon premises to which the courier went led to the arrest of two Chinese males LAM Chi-leung (2651/1807/5328) and Wu Shing-chung (6762/2110/5115). A search of the flat revealed a quantity of equipment, chemicals and paraphernalia associated with the manufacture of No 3 heroin, a small amount of No 3 heroin was also present. An in depth search later revealed four sealed tins of Thai fruit. Each tin contained a packet of esters of morphine. In total 2.2929 kilos of esters of morphine were seized.
13 The two arrested persons were subsequently charged with 'Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking'.
14 The case is pending committal proceedings.
