HONG KONG: MPs' LETTER: MR STAN NEWENS AND OTHERS

M

1. Mr Stan Newens (Labour Co-operative Harlow) Mr Robert Parry (Labour Liverpool, Scotland Exchange) and Mr Stan Thorne Flag A (1) (Labour Preston South) have written to Lord Goronwy-Roberts

enclosing a letter from

about the death of Liu Ping-hon, which occurred in somewhat mysterious circumstances and which has caused a great deal of public interest in Hong Kong.

lir Newens and Mr Thorne both wrote to the Secretary of

State about the case in December 1977. Lord Goronwy-Roberts

(3) replied on 5 January telling the MPs of the reinvestigation of

the incident ordered by the Commissioner of Police and promising to keep them informed. In addition, the Minister of

Flag D(12) State has received a letter from

Flag E Flag F

on 26 January: this is on the same lines as that enclosed with the present MPs' letter. We have delayed replying

until the result of the latest Police

to

enquiries is known.

3. The reinvestigation of this case by the Hong Kong Police has just been completed and their report on it is, at the moment, with the Attorney-General in Hong Kong. We have asked to receive full details of its findings as soon as possible.

4. I suggest, because it is likely to be some weeks before the full details arrive in the office, that Lord Goronwy-Roberts should send an interim reply to the three LPs, and I submit

a draft.
