HOUSING ESTATES

The Housing Authority has recently agreed on a rent increase for all former Government Estates, (which comprise Resettlement and Low Cost Housing) involving some 292,000 tenancies, and, as has been the practice in the past, Honourable Members are invited to consider the matter with a view to support- ing the proposed increase.

C.S. 166

Proposed increase and its effects

2

It is proposed to raise rents by a flat rate of 9 cents a square foot from 1st December 1978. As before, the Authority considers it unnecessary to alter existing differentials of rents for the various types and ages of blocks in order to avoid unnecessary controversy, and because it would be extremely difficult to define reasons for further differentials.

3

The effect on tenants would be an increase in their average monthly expenditure of about 1.03%. In cash terms, 90% of tenants would have an increase of no more than $26 per month, and 50% of no more than $15 per month; with the highest increase of $47 being payable by only 18 flats. A comparison of existing and proposed rents for various types of flat is given below:
