REGISTRY
A tion Teken.
1. I submit a draft reply and background note to the Question tabled by Mr Nicholas Winterton MP (Conservative
for Written answer on 29 June.
S
Macclesfield)
2. Mr Winterton is a member of the Anglo/Hong Kong Parliamentary Group although he has not tabled any Questions on Hong Kong affairs in the last two years. Mr Winterton has simultaneously tabled another Question, to be answered by the Home Secretary, asking in
what circumstances people from Hong Kong may settle in the UK.
It seems likely that his purpose in asking these two Questions is to contrast the ease with which British people may go to Hong Kong with the difficulties that Hong Kong residents face in coming
here.
3. The draft reply is based on information provided by the
Hong Kong Government. M & VD concur.
