of the room and ordered a school janitor to lock the classroom.

All the students were very shocked and they wept and the janitor

aiso wept helplessly.

The time for students to stay in school was shortened.

School opened half an hour later and closed half an hour earlier

compared with that of the past four years. When the summer school

time table was adopted, the school was evacuated within a half

nour after the last class had ended, depriving students of any

chance to enjoy the school's facilities..

3. The lack of trust and communication

Students were asked to bring along with them their identi-

fication cards for the reason that school uniform could not prove

them to be students of the school. Everything had to be put

in writing and signed. Letters from students to the principal

had to be handed to the secretary before the principal read them.

It was ridiculous when instead of meeting the students who asked

to see her, the principal asked the office clerk to note down

the students and jot down what they said.

4. The de-educational school atmosphere

The whole school was suffering from an atmosphere of sus-

picion and hostility. starting from Oct. 1977, the school bags

of the students had been secretly searched many times; a labo-

ratory assistant newly employed by the principal always took pic-

tures of students inside the school premises despite the objec-

tion of the students; conversations were taped; "black lists"

of students were compiled; the police were called at the disposal

of the principal regardless of the feelings of the students; and

parents were asked to see the principal for their children kept

on asking the school in writing not to keep them out in the street

until half an hour before school started, to revive the Students'

Union, to open F.6 classes for the F.5 graduates, to explain the

secret search of the school bags, etc. Besides, the old girls

were not allowed to visit the school or attend activities organized

for the whole school. On one occasion, it was only after waiting
