Hospital fares—if you or your wife have to attend hospital as a patient take your supplementary allowance order book because the hospital will then refund your fares. If your supplementary allowance is not paid by order book ask at the hospital or your local social security office.
Free school meals—ask at your local Education or Education Welfare Office; or in Scotland, District Education Office.
Even if you do not qualify for a supplementary allowance you may still be able to get these things free. For free prescriptions, free milk and vitamins, free dental treatment, dentures and certain NHS glasses get leaflet M11 from any post office or social security office. For hospital fares get leaflet H11 at the hospital or your local social security office.
16. Other help you may get?
Rent and rate rebates and rent allowances any rebate or allowance you are already getting will have to be withdrawn if you get a supplementary allowance for more than a few weeks and the supplementary allowance will make up the loss. But if you do not qualify for a supplementary allowance, you may be entitled to a rebate or a rent allowance. Ask at your town hall or council offices for details.
Attendance allowance-you may be able to get this if you are severely disabled physically or mentally and need a lot of looking after. It does not affect your supplementary allowance. Get leaflet NI205 from your local social security office.
Mobility allowance you may be able to get this if you are unable, or virtually unable, to walk because of physical disablement. It does not affect your supplementary allowance. Get leaflet NI211 from your local social security office.
Family planning-advice and treatment are available for everyone from NHS family planning clinics. Contraceptive supplies which they prescribe and dispense are free. Most NHS family doctors provide a similar service for women.
