Mr. Kenneth Clarke asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent changes have been made in Hong Kong to provisions for workmen's compensation for injury at work, and what percentage of employees in Hong Kong are now eligible for such compensation.

Mr. Luard: Recent changes have widened coverage of the Workmen's Com- pensation Ordinance; extended the time allowed for claims and the cover for medical expenses to 24 months; imposed a surcharge on employers who default on payment; ensured that compensation

covers treatment costs and removed some anomalies. 99 per cent. of employees in the private sector and all public employ- ees are now eligible for such compen sation.

Saudi Arabia
