Mobility allowance
Mobility allowance is intended to help severely disabled people from 5 to pensionable age (65 for men; 60 for women) achieve greater mobility. It is payable to people who are unable (or virtually unable) to walk because of physical disablement.
The allowance is currently payable for people from age 5 to 53. People from 54 to pension age will be gradually phased in by the end of 1979.
The conditions
The medical conditions are that:
the person must be unable or virtually unable to walk because of physical disablement; and
the inability to walk must be likely to persist for at least 12 months from the time the claim is made; and
the person's condition must be such that benefit can be got from time to time from increased facilities for mobility.
There are also requirements as to residence and presence in Great Britain.
Amount payable
The weekly rate is £7·00.
The allowance is payable together with any other social security benefit. But if supplementary benefit is in payment and includes a special addition for mobility the supplementary benefit may be adjusted.
Mobility allowance is taxable.
The allowance cannot be paid in addition to a vehicle or private car allowance provided under the National Health Service. Those with a vehicle or private car allowance are able to switch to mobility allowance automatically under special arrangements without age limit.
