Maternity benefits

Maternity grant may be paid on either the mother's own contributions or on her husband's but not on both. It is to help towards the general expense of a confinement.

Maternity allowance is paid only where sufficient contributions as an employed or self-employed person have been paid by the mother. It is usually payable for 18 weeks starting 11 weeks before the week in which the baby is expected. It cannot be paid for any period during which the woman works. The allowance may be increased in some circumstances if the woman has an adult dependant or a dependent child. See “Earnings- related supplement" on page 9.

Maternity grant and maternity allowance are not taxable.

How to claim

Claim forms are available from local social security offices or maternity clinics. Detailed instructions are given on the form.

When to claim

Maternity grant-from 14 weeks before the expected date of birth up to three months after the birth.

Maternity allowances-between the 14th and 11th week before the expected date of birth. If a claim is later than the 11th week, the allowance cannot usually be back-dated.

Meals on wheels

Where available, a hot midday meal is delivered to the homes of people who are unable to get a meal for themselves. In some areas meals are provided at lunch clubs or day centres. A small charge is generally made. Further information: from local authority social services departments.
