Legal advice and assistance
Legal advice or assistance from a solicitor is available to people of small or moderate means for little or no payment. Advice and assistance on any subject usually dealt with by a solicitor can be given as if on a fee-paying basis. This includes writing letters, drafting wills, obtaining opinions from a barrister, preparing a written statement to help someone appearing before an administrative or appeal tribunal. Visits to a police station or prison are also included. This help does not extend to representations in proceedings before a court or tribunal but, if representation is needed for civil or criminal proceedings in court, the solicitor will advise the client how to apply for legal aid. Legal aid is not generally available for proceedings before tribunals.
