Thank you for your letter of 31 August letting us know of the rumbles of dissatisfaction still lingering on over Mr Cryer's remarks in the House on 24 July. We discussed this at the time with the Foreign Office who told us that Mr Cryer had not agreed to issue any statement explaining these remarks but that he was expected to write to Lord Goronwy-Roberts.
We and the Foreign Office have now seen your further letter of 7 September, enclosing one from the President of the Chinese Manufacturers Association to The Times. I enclose a copy of a letter I have now sent to HKGD, FCO and will keep you informed of the outcome.
