Dear Richard,
LABOUR CONDITIONS IN HONG KONG

We have discussed with you on the telephone Derek March's letter of 31 August about Mr Bob Cryer's remarks in the House of Commons Debate of 24 July about labour conditions in Korea and Hong Kong.
You said that your Department was not expecting Mr Cryer to issue any statement about this but that he might be writing a letter to Lord Goronwy-Roberts about it.
I have now received a further letter from Mr March, with which was enclosed a letter of complaint from the President of the Chinese Manufacturers Association, copies of which were also sent to your Department. I feel that in view of the strength of this protest and particularly the request for a formal statement on the matter from HMG, you will wish to consider whether Lord Goronwy-Roberts would wish to raise this matter again with Mr Cryer. I enclose a copy of Mr March's letter of 31 August.
