depot would remain in use.
Also at this stage, advantage
could be taken of the demolition of the Western Market (currently scheduled for 1982/3) to achieve a further improvement in track alignment at this point, as is illustrated in Figure 15.
Also during this phase, further segregation measures would be introduced along Hennessy Road. At this stage, it would appear that these can be most satisfactorily achieved by
concentrating cross-traffic movements on selected routes
and providing flyovers for the cross traffic. At several
key junctions flyovers are either already under construction e.g. Canal Road, or programmed for construction shortly e.g. Tai Hang Road Flyover and Lau Sin Street Flyover. These combined with two further flyovers at Tonnochy Road and Fleming Road would provide a grade separated crossing over the LRT route approximately every 500m between Central and Causeway Bay. These flyovers together with traffic management measures would enable almost all turns and traffic movements
across the LRT route between Central and North Point to be eliminated and only three signal controlled junctions* would remain to slow down the LRT. Also, the removal of traffic signal controlled junctions along the route would provide significant benefits to other traffic including buses. Pedestrian facilities across llennessy Road and King's Road would ideally be provided by footbridges or subways linked to LRT stops but pedestrian crossings controlled by signals with LRT pré-emption would also be acceptable. Figure 16 shows an outline of the proposed measures between Central and Causeway Bay.
♦
These schemes, together with highway improvements (in the form of flyovers) will provide an almost totally segregated light rail route from Central to North Point with a minimum of at-grade vehicular crossings, but avoiding the need for further tunnel construction. An alternative to the construction of highway flyovers would be the provision of underpasses
