The arrangement of cross-platform interchange at Admiralty is a detailed design problem which requires careful consideration: an initial examination of a design with MTR ticket barriers between the MTR and LRT platforms appears capable of handling the necessary passenger volume, but this does require further

examination.

Operation of the Light Rail Vehicles at this stage will be in pairs; two such pairs are allowed to enter underground stations if necessary under protected signalling systems. This operation of Light Rail Vehicles is accepted practice in Western European systems and reflects the exceptional emergency braking performance the vehicles offer.

Chai Wan Extension The opening of the tunnel section will create an increase in demand for Light Rail Vehicles, and so it seems appropriate to coordinate the tunnel opening with the extension to Chai Wan which makes available further depot facilities. This extension would be constructed to standards similar to the rest of the system (in terms of such parameters as street segregation, tunnel size etc.)

The depot at Chai Wan would be used only for the storage of stock, with the maintenance and repair facilities remaining at Kennedy Town. Again the MTR alignment would be used to reach Chai Wan, with the tracks adopting an at grade configuration west of Shau Kei Wan station and through Chai Wan itself.

Further Measures It would be desirable to include in this phase of the development a realignment of the LRT route through Western along Connaught Road rather than Des Voeux Road if this is shown to be feasible after detailed study. The LRT route would be at-grade, but integrated with the new highway route. It would still terminate at Whitty, beyond which the largely single track connection to Kennedy Town.
