Relationship to Committed Transport Schemes

There are a number of major road schemes under construction or planned that will have a significant effect on travel

conditions in the corridor. As with all road schemes of

this nature the exact effect will depend on the management

policies used to regulate the growth of traffic and the

extent to which the relative priority on existing streets is

given over to public transport, access requirements and

pedestrians.

These

conditions and the priority given to through traffic, public transport, access and pedestrians in Des Voeux Road West

and the western end of Des Voeux Road Central.

effects will increase in significance between 1980 and 1982

with further possible improvements in Connaught Road in

1983 and 1984. In the east the Island Eastern Corridor

project offers a significant increase in road capacity and

an easing of existing conditions by the mid eighties.

These road projects are also necessary for the major tunnel

schemes such as the MTR Island Line and can be used to serve

public transport directly in the form of express buses and

also to improve the reliability and performance of surface

public transport on the existing roads. The extent of this

improvement varies along the corridor and in any ease will depend upon the success of other policies. The significant

point is that there do appear to be options available other than a complete tunnel system for improving the level of public transport service in the medium term. Whether they

are sufficient in the longer term is much more difficult to judge.
