THE MYSTERY OF HONG KONG ELECTRIC'S NEW POWER STATION.
Further to my letter of 31 January I now find that David Jeaffreson is also concerned that Hong Kong Electric should not use the alleged 60% price differential between Mitsubishi and Northern Engineering Industries to raise doubts on the competitiveness of GEC's offer to CLP/Esso.
2.
He asked for my views on Hong Kong Electric's contention that Mitsubishi have built several dual fired plants of this size and that coal fired plants are being operated in Japan with complete satisfaction. I should be grateful for your help - you will recall that the Electrowatt report to CLP met great store by the unique experience of the UK in the construction and operation of coal fired power stations.
3. One final piece of gossip. At lunch yesterday Laurence Kadeorie told se that he had written to the Hong Kong Government pointing out that CLP/Esso would be able and delighted to supply Hong Kong island's power needs from the mid 1980's and that CLP, if faced with any generating shortfall before their new plant comes on stream, would, of course, be prepared to buy power from HKE as a stop gap measure. He did not say so but I suspect that his letter was written in response to a Government approach sċmed at promoting mome sort of marriage.
