In addition to these craft characteristics, the Study guidance
also covered a number of ancillary aspects associated with the
Patrol Vessels. In particular, the study was to examine UK 'off the
shelf' designs and cover such areas as:

(1) Through-life costs.
(2) In-service upkeep.
(3) Availability for sea.
(4) The number of vessels required.
(5) Any trade-offs between costs, capability
and availability.
The Craft Study was undertaken by the Director General Ships
Department of MOD(N). It was set against the NST description of
the anticipated tasks of the Patrol Craft post 1983, details of
the likely 'threat' facing them and the way in which they would
be operated in conjunction with other sections of the Hong Kong
Security Forces.

Five British Shipbuilders/Designers were invited to forward
details of craft falling within the required characteristics.
