ANNEX C TO
NSR 7015 SUPPORTING PAPER
CRAFT STUDY
1.
Introduction.
This Annex provides a synopsis of the Craft Study under-
taken in response to NST 7015. The Study took five months to complete and cost 110 MOD (N) man days.
2.
Background
a.
The Naval Staff Target (NST 7015) for the Hong Kong Patrol
Craft, circulated by DNOR in December 1977, called for a Craft Study
to be completed by April 1978.
b. Guidelines for the Study included the following craft
characteristics:
(1) The craft must be robust, seaworthy and simple to
operate/maintain.
(2) They should be capable of being refitted in Hong Kong,
possibly built locally and should be relatively inexpensive.
(3) The craft should have an obviously military appearance.
(4) Craft with a maximum speed in the range 15-40 knots
were to be investigated from the point of view of comparing cost
against maximum speed and seakeeping qualities. However it was
envisaged that a vessel with a maximum speed of at least 20 knots
and probably around 25 knots would be required.
(6) Diesel engine propulsion was preferred to avoid major
alteration of the present support arrangements (which are
geared to the diesel driven TCN Class ships currently undertaking
the Patrol Craft duties).
