Located on Tai Mo Shan mountain this unit provides radar facilities for long distance control of military aircraft approaching the Colony.

LOCAL FORCES

19. The Hong Kong Local Defence Forces consist of the Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) and The Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force, all Territorial.

The Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) has an establishment of 644 volunteers and is organised as a light reconnaissance regiment. The Regiment is under command of HQ Land Forces at all times.

21. The Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force (RHKAAF) is basically a part time organisation but there is a small permanent staff which includes seconded RAF personnel. The force has a strength of about 120 volunteers and is equipped with 3 ALOUETTE helicopters, 2 BULLDOG series 120, 1 BEECHCRAFT MUSKETEER single engined trainers and 1 BRITTEN NORMAN ISLANDER aircraft. Tasks carried out by the RHKAAF include liaison and internal security flights, aerial survey and anti- smuggling patrols.

POLICE

22. The Royal Hong Kong Police Force has an establishment of 17,250, but its strength is approximately 16,051. Of these some 760 are Europeans who comprise the bulk of the Force's Inspectorate. The rank and file are almost entirely Chinese except for a few Pakistanis. The Force is exceptionally smart, well disciplined and well equipped. It acquitted itself conspicuously well during the disturbances of 1967. Close liaison with the Services is maintained, including the manning of joint Police/Military operations rooms (POLMILS). There are in addition some 4,500 Auxiliary Policemen of whom about 1,300 are normally employed on uniform duties at any one time.
