the DIS stress that it is virtually impossible to provide a realistic

assessment of potential trouble spots up to five years ahead.

No assessment has therefore been attempted of the likelihood of two

or more major operations being required at the same time.

Stationed Forces

42.

Reinforcement. Requirements to reinforce the Garrison in

Hong Kong and further reinforce the Belize Garrison are possible.

Less likely, (but it is difficult to be precise) would be a need

to enhance the UK forces in Cyprus or the detachment in the Falkland

Islands. It may also be necessary to implement one or more of the

Gibraltar Joint Theatre Plans. Taking the Reinforcement of Hong

Kong as the operation which would have most impact on NATO:

a.

One UK Battalion would be required (the second battalion

would be drawn from Brunei until September 1983).

b.

7 VC10 and 7 Hercules aircraft would be required

and cancellations of scheduled, exercise and special flights

would result.

Other Commitments

43. United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. Additional UN

Peacekeeping commitments are likely in Namibia, probable

in Rhodesia, possible in the Middle East and conceivable in

the Horn of Africa. Subject to Ministers agreeing the recom-

mendations of the Chiefs of Staff, the UK contribution to these

operations would consist of one infantry battalion group for up

to six months. The initial airlift of this force would require
