1. As you know, I have now obtained the necessary authority for my visit to Hong Kong in the first half of October. I am glad that the proposed timings are convenient from your point of view (Hong Kong telno 1050) and I will go ahead and book my flights.
2. I am very happy to leave it to you to decide what I should do and see during my visit. But in drawing up the programme I should be grateful if you would bear in mind that although I have a good basic knowledge of the territory from my two widely separated per- iods of residence, I have not been in ong Kong for almost nine years. So I hope there will be time for me to see something of the enormous physical changes which have taken place since the end of 1969 (eɛ new towns, new industrial estates and the Mass Transit workings) as well as to meet a wide cross section of people inside and outside Govern- ment. My main aim is to bring my knowledge of Hong Kong and its problems up to date, and to get to know, and be known by as many as possible of the people with whom I shall be dealing.
3.
The following are one or two suggestions for the programme (not all mine);-
(a) I know a good many senior officials from my time as
Assistant Folitical Adviser and look forward to seeing them again. Other old friends or acquaintances I should like to meet if possible include:
David Newbigging (Jardines)
Derek Davies (Far East Economic Review)
Henry Litton QC
Leo Goodstadt (formerly FEER, now ? Chinese University) Ron Hutcheon (SCMP)
Bert Levin (Deputy US Consul-General)
KC Jay (Banker)
Robert Tang Wo (Textile manufacturer
I don't feel at all
strongly about him but he included my wife and me on a dinner party he gave/TH June and issued a warm invitation for me to see him while in Hong Kong).
Some of these will obviously be more appropriate for social occasions (if there are any!) than for meetings.
