English and Chinese). One notable exception was the FEER see Derek Davies' 'Travellers' Tales' of 26 August.

The various receptions surrounding the visit (including one at the City Hall) provided further opportunities for Wang K'uang to join in the social scene here. He still looks frail but when I talked to him at the City Hall reception he was more animated than on earlier occasions when we had met. One interesting sidelight was that NCNA made a point of informing the US Consulate-General of the time when the Company would be arriving at the airport. The Americans took the hint and Tom Shoesmith, their Consul-General, turned up to meet them. This was apparently the first time the US Consulate- General have met Wang, except at one or two third-party receptions.

The Company's visit showed current United Front policy to the fore. We can no doubt expect more visits by cultural groups and further requests to use the City Hall. However, no other visits are in the pipeline at present and Liu Shih-kun has declined an invitation to perform at the Urban Council's 3rd Festival of Asian Arts in October.

Yours ever,

Iain
