Chinese Foreign Trade Minister Li Chian dealing with Chinese foreign trade in which he also

discusses at some length the supply situation of Ilongkong and Macao. He says that "Hongkong

historical relic and will be settled in a

suitable manner when the conditions for doing so

are ripe. Under present-day conditions, the

export of consumer goods to Hongkong and Macao

is a special problem of Chinese foreign trade.

The political and economic situation in Hongkong

is complicated; competition in this market is very keen. We must consolidate and extond Hongkong's

patriotic, anti-hegemonist united front and unite ourselves with all patriotic fellow-countrymen

b) On 1 October 1977, a group of prominent business-

men from Hongkong went to Peking on the occasion of the Chinese National Day. It was received,

among others, by Defence Minister Yeh Chieng-ying and Mr. Liao Cheng-chih, a Central Committee member and adviser to the Ministry of Foreign

Affairs. Liao told his visitors that the late

Chairman Mao had ordered that China should not

take back Hongkong until Taiwan was liberated.
