Force totalled 681. On 30th September 1978 there were
only 537 vacancies in the rank and file establishment
of 17,087, but a further increase is expected in the

3.
Since the scheme to re-deploy surplus Government
primary school teachers to other jobs within the Education
Department and other Government departments was announced
in July 1977, 631 teachers have been re-deployed under
this scheme or have had their applications for early or
normal retirement approved. The estimated surplus in
September 1980 (when compulsory retirements will be
introduced, if necessary) has therefore been reduced from
1,100 to 469, so far.
