In Strata B, C1 and C2, a sample of Estate blocks for each type of special

housing was selected. Fieldworkers then proceeded to list flats in these

estates in random order, starting with a randomly-selected floor in each

building, and with a randomly selected building in each estate complex.

These strata are therefore not geographical but represent these types of

housing wherever they may be located.

The pre-listing in Strata D to L took a slightly different form. Being highly urbanised areas, it was possible to make an initial selection of

a sample of city blocks, based on the most up-to-date maps of the urban

area of the Colony available through the Crown Lands and Survey Office..

Thus, in each different area, a sample of blocks was selected, and

fieldworkers listed all homes in the blocks.

Finally, Strata M, N and 0 were treated differently, because of the rural

conditions prevailing in these areas. Primary Sampling Units (PSU's)

.were developed for each stratum in the following manner;

cities (such as Tsuen Wan or Yuen Long)

in which standard "city-blocks" could

be located on a map, and by treating
