CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
1.
I am replying to your letter of 6 April to Michael Sullivan. I should say at the outset that neither he nor I have any record of Mr Gilbert's letter being passed to us; your letter was the first we knew of the request.
2. I asked the FCO Library for anything they had on the subject and I enclose the sole publication they posess. As you will see it is a 1972 Canadian survey and about a third of it is devoted to reviewing the position on capital punishment in other countries including the UK, France and the USA. It is issued on loan for an initial period of three months.
3. A glance at the bibliography will indicate the extent of literature available on this subject. I am afraid that the enclosed booklet is all that we have readily to hand.
