1. In the 3 general elections since Belize was granted internal self-government in 1963, the People's United Party under George Price have won convincing majorities on a platform which had as its main plank the achieving of early, full and secure independence for Belize. The Opposition party is similarly though less forthrightly committed, but argue that the time is not ripe (it will only be ripe if they come to power). That is about the extent to which Belize has stated its intention to go for independence.

2. If the Belizean people can be brought to accept the terms of a settlement with Guatemala - and they will have to be consulted about that they will probably then accept independence.
