With reference to your letter of 6 November, we agree in principle, and subject to the usual exigencies, that your next spell of leave should be as you requested, from about mid-February to the end of March 1979.
However, I wonder whether you would be interested in yet another extension, to May 1980, when you become 60 and therefore, in establishment thinking, senile. We would be delighted to recommend this to the DTAS Board, whose reaction I cannot of course foretell. If you were extended, would this alter your preferred timing of leave? The snag here is that the Board does not meet until next year, possible in February and that will be far too late for you to make plans for the leave you are now proposing. !
3. Perhaps you would send me a personal telegram.
