Government shall require Stenographers
to be literate in Chinese and English and numerate, able to type at 50 w.p.m. which is regarded as the minimum typing speed for efficient working, and take shorthand at 80 w.p.m. on entry, increased to
90 w.p.m. during trial or probation which is regarded as the minimum shorthand speed for efficient working.
25.
Stenographers shall undertake stenographic and typing duties but shall be expected also to undertake occasional minor clerical and minor secretarial duties associated with stenographic and typing posts.
26.
Stenographers shall be paid $920 per month on entry with 5 academic and technical attainments namely HK Certificate of Education passes in Mathematics, Chinese, English, a 50 w.p.m. typing speed and an 80 or 90 w.p.m. shorthand speed. Stenographers having a full Certificate of Education, i.e. at least 5 academic subjects including those of Maths, Chinese and English will, if they have the required technical skills, enter at $990 per month.

The Shorthand Audio Typist grade is at
present paid on a scale of $990 - $1630.
28.
Stenographers shall have a career scale of 11 points proceeding to a maximum of $1865 per month; those who enter with 3 Certificate of Education subjects shall be given an increment should they obtain two more approved academic subjects whilst all shall receive one further increment for an increase of 20 w.p.m. in either their shorthand or typing speeds or two further increments for a similar increase in both, provided they have not yet reached their maximum.
29.
Stenographers appointed before the restructuring shall retain their right to incremental credit under the old terms.
30.
Stenographers who meet the criteria shall
subject to there being vacancies be given
opportunities for in-service advancement to the grade of Personal Secretary, and/or to the new grade of Supervisor of Typing Services.
