42. On the evening of 25th May, 1976, acting on information, a party of Narcotics Bureau officers intercepted a cargo junk near Kwai Chung Container Terminal Pier. The junk had been seen meeting a shrimp trawler from which it was believed a consignment of drugs had been transferred. An examination of the junk revealed 4 ropes leading down into the water, each of which appeared to be supporting a heavy weight. The three adults aboard the junk, Chinese males Kwok Kai (6753/0163) and LEUNG Sze-kan (2733/0099/2740), and Chinese female Kwok Tai-hei (6753/1601/ 0823) were detained.
43. The following morning a team of Royal Navy Divers arrived at the scene and assisted in the raising of the cargo. The 4 ropes were found to be supporting two fishing nets which contained 40 sacks of drugs. Thirty-six of the sacks contained a total of 718 packages of raw opium, and the other 4 sacks each contained 20 blocks of ‘999' brand morphine. KWOK, LEUNG and Kwok were arrested and have been charged with Possession Of Dangerous Drugs For The Purpose Of Unlawful Trafficking. The case is pending trial.
44. The total drugs seized comprised 1482 kilogrammes of raw opium and 109.37 kilogrammes of a mixture containing 86.98 kilogrammes of a salt of morphine. This represented one of the largest consignments of narcotics ever to have been interdicted in Hong Kong.
The junk from which the consignment of narcotics was suspended by four ropes.
