crossed and to say that Commissioner of Police had directed a named police officer and arrangements had been made for an interpreter from Secretariat to assist that officer. Arrangements made for interview of 4 witnesses on 20/10 at 10 a.m. I promised similar arrangements for the other 6 witnesses. I received reply from Gunston & Chow that mentioned time and place for interview was in their opinion suitable. Crown discovered that Mr. Hampton was out of the Colony. Tentative arrangements made for the purpose had been decided.: I caused a letter in standard form dated 28/10 to each of 10 persons concerned. On 29/10 I received phone call from Mr. Hampton telling me of his desire to see the witnesses and I told him what had been done and of letters which had been signed by

the witnesses. Request was made by phone by Mr. Hampton but by the time

request had been made by him each of the witnesses had declined to see

any of the defence witnesses.

Mr. Hampton: I am grateful to my learned friend for clearing up the (1) that witness is not confused and from his answer he did

consent was being sought to interview by both solicitors and that disposes of any confusion in his mind (2) essential that counsel or solicitors if they do say anything in

Court that it is true. Telephone clarification was said but I wish

to interview witnesses. Subsequently confirmed by letter and it was

according to that statement which in the heat of the moment was

challenged.

Why did you refuse to be interviewed?

I had enough trouble, and then I was served the document asking

me to see 2 solicitors. I realised I would have to attend Court

and so I did not want to go.

Why not insufficient time at your disposal?

Not so. I was perturbed.

In what way?

I had gone to see officers of ICAC and I did not wish to see

any other persons.
