THE ENGLISH PAPERS
All three printed the June 4 announcement without any colouring.
SCMP (June 6) carried interviews with the Hang Seng Bank's Mr. Q.W. Lee,
the Chartered Bank's Mr. W.C.L. Brown and astrologer Mr. Choi Pak-lai, all of whom
oppose the proposal.
THE STAR (June 7) published a Street Poll with four members of the
public, three of whom said it was "not a bad idea." The fourth seemed only mildly
opposed to it.
All three English papers reported without comment the Jones-Peacock
Press Conference on June 18.
THE STANDARD (June 23) quoted the Chinese General Chamber of
Commerce as being fearful of harmful effects on trade with China, particularly
in deliveries.
SCMP (June 27) published the results of its "Timepoll" which showed
that 47 per cent of people replying to its printed coupon would prefer Standard
Time the whole year round. The paper gave no indication of how many people
posted in coupons.
In an accompanying editorial the paper said the Government would not
be wise to press on with the idea. The only way of find out what people really
wanted was to try both GMT plus 9 and GMT plus 8, it said.
