NEW EVENING POST was critical from the outset. The initial announcement

was sarcastically headlined: "Hong Kong to adopt Summer Time all year round. The

Hong Kong Government has staged a new show and is calling it 'Hong Kong Summer

Time'." By June 5 it had added to the usual round of interviews the remarks of

waterfront workers who complained that they faced "great inconvenience."

The communist papers fired another broadside following the Jones-Peacock

Press Conference, some playing up in their headlines that the proposal would be

reconsidered. WEN WEI's headlines read; "There is no use for the Government to

defend the proposal to adopt Summer Time, which is not welcomed by the public.

Mr. Jones and Mr. Peacock cannot give strong evidence to support the proposal.

On June 22 WEN WEI hit on a novel argument: The proposal would

enable the Jockey Club to stage more races because of the extra sunlight; this

of course would mean more betting.

As various organisations (Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Heung Yee Kuk

etc) announced their opposition, the communist papers gave prominent coverage to

their views.

NEW EVENING POST (July 1) sniped at KMB's proposal that schools

and factories should stagger starting hours to avoid overloading buses in peak

hours. It said KMB got its inspiration from the Hong Kong time proposal, and

predicted there would be more such "ridiculous ideas" to come.
