THE COMMUNIST PAPERS OBJECTIONS
WEN WEI PO (June 5) set the pace for the communist Press with a
vitriolic headline: "The Government is adopting Summer Time through winter over
public objections and is raping public opinion. It is changing Summer Time to Hong
Kong Standard Time and forcing the public to go to work and school in the dark.
It quoted Mr. C.P. Hung, Chairman of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association, and
various other notables.
WEN WEI PO (June 10, 11 and 12) kept up the opposition, casting
its net as wide as a University Lecturer, Mr. Andrew Wong of the Chinese University
(who opted for year-round Standard Time) and the Chairman of the Astronomy
Society of the HK University, Mr. Lee Wai-man (who wondered why the people
should be forced to change their daily routine). WEN WEI pounced on the views
of Mr. Q.W. Lee of the Hang Seng Bank and Mr. W.S.L. Brown of the Chartered
Bank, who believe there would be confusion in financial circles.
TA KUNG PAO carried factual reports of the announcement on June 5
and did not warm to its task of opposing the proposal until the next day, interviewing
community leaders, educationists, students and workers on the same lines as WEN WEI.
By June 18 it was quoting tramway workers, factory employees and even vegetable
farmers.
HK COMMERCIAL DAILY too printed the announcement on June 5 sans
criticism but began stoking its fire the following day, with a familiar round of
interviews.
