Persons who enter legally from China and who are landed for a limited period i.e. Overseas Chinese and Non- Cantonese, must obtain Declarations of Identity and re-entry visas for Hong Kong if they wish to travel. During July the traffic in such persons was as follows :-

Since 1st January 1974, 63,572 holders of Declarations of Identity departed for China and 50,507 returned to Hong Kong. The great majority had returned there to visit their families. The similar figures for Macao and elsewhere are available only since 1st April 1975; these are

During July 1977, 221 illegal immigrants were arrested compared with 181 last month. This is the second highest arrest figure since repatriation commenced on 30th November 1974 (235 were arrested in December 1974).

Most of them were between 16-25 years of age. ALL were processed at Takuling and consequently 214 were repatriated during the month, and the remaining 7 were awaiting a decision. In addition, 1 illegal immigrant who was arrested in June was repatriated to China in July. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 19 on 10th July.

In the evering of 9th July, two young farmers from Wai Yeung arrived at Ping Chau on a rubber boat. They hid on the island overnight and managed to contact their relatives the next morning. On 12th July, their relatives picked them up but they were all arrested by the Police at Ping Chau Pier whilst attempting to board the ferry to town. They were repatriated to China on 16th July after a decision was made to waive prosecuting the relatives for aiding and abetting.

On 23rd July, a party of five farmers from Po On entered the water at Ha Sha, China and swam to Ping Chau, After suffering from hunger, for six days, they were forced to surrender to the Police on 29th July and were subsequently repatriated to China on the following day.
