Illegal Immigration from China and Macao

During March 1977, 115 illegal immigrants (112 from China and 4 from liacao) surrendered to or were arrested by the Police, compared with 140 last month (138 from China and 2 from Macao).

Of the 112 illegal immigrants from China arrested, 49 were land crossers, 39 bay crossers and 24 sea crossers. Most of them were between 15-25 years of age. All were processed at Ta Ku Ling. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 13 on 25th March.

On 3rd March, 3 farmers (2 male and 1 female) of Chun Lung Commüne, after climbing over the border fence at Perimeter 1 (Sha Tau Kok); proceeded to town with the assistance of 3 local residents. They were intercepted by the Police at Sha Tau Kok Village. The local residents were prosecuted for aiding and abetting but were acquitted. female illegal immigrant was later allowed to stay es enquiries revealed that she was the wife of one of the aiders and abetters. The remaining 2 were repatriated to China on 11th March.
The
On 25th March, 4 youths from Canton entered the water at Yim Tin, China and swam towards Hong Kong. One of them was drowned in Mirs Day and the other 3 were later picked up by a Police launch off Kat 0 Island. They were repatriated to China on 26th and 27th March respectively.

6 bodies, believed to be those of illegal immigrants drowned whilst attempting entry, were recovered from the sea during the month (2 in the eastern sector, 3 in the western sector and 1 in the northern sector).

The cumulative total of illegal immigrants arrested by or surrendered to the Police since 1st January 1968 is now 30,097. The yearly totals are as follows:-
