GREEN PAPER ON BRITISH NATIONALITY LAW
The Home Secretary tabled in Parliament a Green Paper on possible changes in the British nationality Law. Under a scheme proposed in the Green Paper, citizens of the United Kingdom and colonies would become either British citizens or British overseas citizens.
Two papers, Sing Pao and Wah Kin Man Po, felt that the proposal would have no significant effect on Hong Kong, Wah Kiu Man Po saw the proposals as "nothing more than moves to bring the status of other (Commonwealth) countries down to that of Hong Kong." Sing Pao expressed fears that other countries might follow Britain's example and require visas for people holding passports issued by British colonies.
Wah Kiu Man Po suggested that, to mantain Hong Kong's interests and dignity, the Hong Kong Government should apply reciprocal measures to deal with British citizens and British overseas citizens trying to enter Hong Kong.
The pro-Communist Hong Kong Evening News asked: why should Hong Kong transfer” its annual surplus to Britam il our status is not properk recognised by Britain? The paper wondered if the proposals were designed i anticipation of 1997 when the lease for the New Territories, would expire.

The lease for the New Territories will expire i deny that Britam's proposed nationality Low may have been designed in anticipation of 1997.
If the proposed British nationality law is passed in Parliament, other countries may follow Britam's examples and require visas for people holding British passports--issued by British colomies.

The proposals are aimed at relieving the pressure caused by the influx of immigrants to Britai i from India, Pakistan and Australia and is not directed against Hong Kong. But there is very little chance that regulations governing the entry into Britain of Hong Kong British subjects will be relaxed.
The proposed British nationality law will no doubt affect 2.6 million Hong Kong residents holding Hong Kong British passports. But according to the principles laid down in the Green Paper, the effect will not be too great. Of course, it is also unlike y that Hong Kong, will benefit from the proposals.
As holders of Brit sh passports issued by the Hong Kong Government have all along been treated as British overseas citizens, the proposals are nothing more than moves to bring the status of other (Commonwealthi countries down to that of Hong Kong,
To maintain Hong Kong's intereas and dignity, the Hong Kong Government should apply reciprocal measures to deal with British citizens and British overseas citizens who want to come to Hong Kong, il Britam adopts the proposed nationality law.
