5.1 DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PUBLIC HEALTH FIELD

The preventive health services in Hong Kong are to be improved during the period of the Development Plan, and in the initial stages, will concentrate upon a tuberculosis (publicity) campaign and upon an improvement of the family planning facilities at the maternal and child health centres.

5.2 The Dental Nurse Training School (MacLehose Centre) which is now under construction, will yield its first qualified dental nurses and therapists in 1981, and this will signal an improvement in the school dental care programme: 40 chairs will be required shortly. A Dental School within the University of Hong Kong is to be built: this decision resulted from a recommendation contained in the Plan and is designed to meet the increased demand, as in the previous sentence, for - in particular the school dental service. Also to provide a ratio of 1 dentist to 6,000 population for the private sector. There will be a requirement for

approx 200 dental chairs for the Dental School, by 1980.

5.3 A Blood Transfusion Centre is to be located at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and is due for completion by 1980. The development is to be made in collaboration with the Blood Transfusion Centre in Manchester.

6.1 MEDICAL EQUIPMENT PROSPECTS

It would appear that the services of the Government Laboratory and the Institute of Pathology are likely to be further enlarged and a number of new laboratories are scheduled to be provided in the next 8 years. More emphasis is being placed by Government on pollution and drug control, and it is thought that there could be a requirement for thin layer chromatography and for scintillation counters, particularly in relation to the latter need. A considerable demand for examinations relating to chemical pathology, serology, virology and forensic medicine has been noted in both Government and private sectors: eg the number of examinations carried out by the Government Laboratories in 1975 was 92,130 increase of over 22,000 on the 1974 figure: the number carried out by the Institute of Pathology exceeded 338,000 - an increase of 14% on 1974. It is believed that funds will be made available in the 1977/78 financial year for the purchase of :-
