than half the projects which we are supporting are in the field of

community health and non-formal education, the traditional areas of

e voluntary agency activity, rather than in directly productive

development.

34. The EEC also launched a scheme during 1976 for helping to finance

projects undertaken in developing countries by NGOs of member countries.

It is too early to say whether this initiative will have any effect on

the number of projects submitted to the ODM.

Apart from the Joint Funding Scheme, the ODM also supported about

30 NGO projects connected with population activities in the context

of family health and welfare programmes. £130,000 was spent on these

projects in 1976.

35. The agencies themselves including church and missionary societies spent an estimated £26m (847m) on their overseas work in 1976.
