DESIGNATION OF THE "INTERNATIONAL" BOUNDARY BETWEEN

HONG KONG AND CHINA ON MAPS OF UK ORIGIN

References:

A.

B.

Your letter (M J Upton) dated 29 Jul 77. Our D/Svy 3/1/60 dated 25 Jul 77.

In response to your letter at reference A we have taken the following action on the depiction of the Hong Kong boundary:-

1.

2.

Civil mapping. We have complied with the Hong Kong, Lands and Surveys Dept, PWD, requirement and deleted:

a.

i. The International boundary symbol and text from legend The Chinese and English disclaimer notes. (The actual boundary remains on the face of the sheet).

ii.

b.

Military mapping. We have made no changes to the military maps currently in production and do not intend to make any change to the stocks of maps already produced.

Now that a little time has elapsed since the "incident", you may wish to consider whether we should continue with our current practice on military mapping, or make changes on future productions and revisions.

Should you decide that a change of policy is required, the following might be appropriate:

3.

4.

a. Delete "International" from the boundary description in the table of conventional signs (para 4 to reference A).

b. Annotate the boundary on the face of the map with a phrase such as "treaty line 1899".

C. Use a different symbol of the same weight for the boundary on the face of the map.

A copy of series L885 sheet 4 is enclosed as an example of current military practice. However your attention is drawn to the boundary disclaimer note which is not in accordance with general FCO policy as outlined in para 4b to reference B.
