The major Canadian export to China is wheat; also nickel in some quantity.
FRG exports to China are now five times more valuable in 3m than UK exports. Apart from steel, FRG supplied two petro-chemical plants in 1976 and has contracted to supply a polyester fibre plant this year. Also possibilities in open-caste mining technology.
Italy has now overtaken UK as an exporter to China. Italy recently contracted to supply centrifugal compressor technology, valued at 8-9 3m.
The drop in overall Chinese imports from 1975-76 was partly due to a continuation of the 74-75 policy of restricting imports for balance of payments reasons, and partly due to a reluctance on the part of Chinese trade officials to take initiatives during a period of political unrest
and contention.
The performance of FRG, France and Italy indicates that there is an open and expanding market for Western technology in China that the UK does not appear to be taking advantage of.
